What seemed like an ordinary early morning in a quiet home in Balneário Arroio do Silva, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, turned into a scene of tension, chase, and bloodshed when a 42-year-old man broke in through the window of the residence where a minor was sleeping.

According to the authorities' reconstruction of events, the 17-year-old was in his room when he heard strange noises and saw a man manage to climb in through one of the house's windows. The intruder, identified as Daniel Silvestre Silveira, was not unknown to the police: he had an extensive criminal record with prior convictions for robbery, theft, receiving stolen goods, kidnapping, and other offenses.

Upon being caught inside the house, the man allegedly tried to steal the boy's cell phone. It was then, according to the minor's testimony, that a desperate struggle began inside the room. Amid the chaos, the two became embroiled in a physical altercation as the teenager tried to prevent the criminal from escaping with his belongings or attacking him.

The confrontation didn't end inside the room

The investigation indicates that the intruder left the house and tried to flee, but the teenager, still shaken by the attack, followed him with a knife in his hand. It was outside the house that the fatal outcome occurred: the young man delivered the decisive stab wound, causing the intruder to fall in the street, where he died before emergency services arrived.

Following the incident, the minor was taken to the police station to give a statement, believing he had acted in self-defense; however, the case took an unexpected turn.

The officer on duty determined that the immediate threat had already ended when the man was fleeing the residence, and therefore initially rejected the self-defense claim and ordered the teenager detained on homicide charges.

The decision has sparked a heated debate in Brazil, as many believe the boy reacted out of panic and adrenaline after discovering a criminal inside his home in the middle of the night.

Neighbors in the area say the neighborhood has been experiencing repeated robberies and that the fear of encountering criminals inside their homes is becoming increasingly common.
