A Peruvian National Police (PNP) officer intervened in an attempted robbery against a money changer on the 11th block of Jirón de la Unión, in downtown Lima, near the Civic Center and Real Plaza shopping mall.

According to security camera footage shared on social media, the three men arrived on a motorcycle and approached the victim, who was leaving work.

During the incident, a shootout occurred, causing panic among passersby and local business owners.

The police officer, who was in civilian clothes and reportedly belonged to the Green Squadron, reacted immediately.

He used his firearm, firing shots—including several into the air—to stop the assailants' escape.

One of the criminals was wounded in the leg and lay on the ground, while the other three were subdued and arrested at the scene.

Authorities recovered the $16,000 that had been stolen from the money changer, as well as two cell phones, a money changer's vest, and the motorcycle used in the robbery.

The detainees were preliminarily identified as part of a gang dedicated to extorting money changers in the city center.

At least two of them have prior records for drug trafficking, theft, and illegal possession of firearms.
