The night in the Tierras Blancas sector of Coquimbo turned into a scene of terror when a street argument escalated brutally, and one of those involved pulled out a firearm and shot a 26-year-old man at point-blank range.
The victim fell gravely wounded in the middle of the street while those around him went from laughter and commotion to desperate screams.
According to the investigation, the incident occurred on Las Rozas Street, a residential area where residents say that confrontations and violent incidents have become increasingly frequent.
Witnesses reported that a fight broke out between several individuals, and in the midst of the altercation, one of them drew a weapon and opened fire directly at the young man, striking him in the chest. Although he was rushed to the Tierras Blancas Emergency Medical Center (SAR), he arrived without vital signs.
A video began circulating on social media in the following hours. The footage shows the moment before the shooting, with people apparently joking around the confrontation, until a loud bang completely changes the scene and everyone runs in panic upon seeing the young man collapse. This recording was one of the key pieces of evidence in reconstructing how the crime occurred.
Detectives from the La Serena Homicide Brigade and forensic experts began their investigation immediately in the early morning hours. Thanks to criminal analysis, review of security camera footage, witness statements, and police intelligence work coordinated with the Public Prosecutor's Office, authorities were able to identify the alleged shooter in record time: a 26-year-old man, the same age as the victim, who also had a criminal record.
The arrest was made just hours after the homicide, preventing the suspect from fleeing the area. Authorities confirmed that he was detained as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting and was placed at the disposal of the Guarantee Court for his detention hearing and subsequent formal charges for homicide with a firearm.
